MUSIC IN EXILE
Émigré composers of the 1930s
Generously supported by The Kahanoff Foundation & Leslie and Anna Dan

The ARC Ensemble, the ensemble-in-residence at Canada's Royal Conservatory, in partnership with Tel Aviv University, Mishkenot Sha'ananim and the Jerusalem Cinematheque, presents Music in Exile, a series of concerts and events which explore the works and the historical context of the composers who fled Europe during the 1930s; as well as those who stayed behind, resisted the regime and became “internal exiles.”

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

March 1st – 30th Entartete Musik exhibition
The Great Foyer of the Central Library, Tel Aviv University

A critical reconstruction of the 1938 Düsseldorf exhibition, which attempted to define and identify entartete (“degenerate”) music: works that the Nazis labelled unacceptable because of their style, content or the racial origin of their composers. The exhibition, which has been presented to international acclaim in over 70 cities including Berlin, Los Angeles, London and Barcelona, incorporates items from Tel Aviv University's Wiener Collection and is curated by the scholar and critic Dr Albrecht Dümling, Berlin.
Free admission

March 6, 7:00 p.m : Forbidden Sounds

Produced in connection with the exhibition "Banned by the Nazis: Entartete Musik," this documentary includes interviews with émigré composers Ernst Křenek, Berthold Goldschmidt, and Herbert Zipper as well as historical scenes from the Nazi era.

Preceded by "HONOUR BOUND – The Exile of Adolf Busch" directed by James Murdoch, a powerful short film that recounts the acclaimed violinist's decision to boycott his homeland.

A remarkable group of exiles made their homes in Los Angeles during the Nazi years. In this film Bertolt Brecht, Erich Maria Remarque, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Arnold Schoenberg, and others are recalled by those who knew them.

Clarinet Quintet, op. 31a Paul Ben-Haim [1897 – 1984]
Melodies from the East for voice and piano Paul Ben-Haim
Three Songs Kurt Weill [1900 – 1950]
String Quintet in F# minor, op. 63 Walter Braunfels [1882 – 1954]

A fascinating concert of works by three very different exiles. Ben-Haim (originally Frankenburger) emigrated from Germany to British Mandated Palestine in 1933 and became one of Israel's most distinguished composers. Walter Braunfels, half-Jewish and a highly successful opera composer during the 1920s, spent the Second World War in “inner exile”. Kurt Weill's exile transformed his style and established him as one of the most influential figures in the growth and development of the musical.
